Benjamin Franklin, an American polymath who was active as a writer, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, printer, publisher, and political philosopher, was born on January 17, 1706 [O.S. January 6, 1705] and died on April 17, 1790. Franklin was one of the founding fathers of the United States, a key figure in his era's intellectual life, and the first Postmaster General. He also contributed to the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independence.
His work on electricity, the mapping and naming of the Gulf Stream current, and contributions to the American Enlightenment and the history of physics made him a significant figure in science. He is credited with many inventions, including the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove. He established a number of public institutions, notably the Philadelphia Library Company.
At age 23, Franklin published the Pennsylvania Gazette in Philadelphia, the capital city of the colonies, where he rose to prominence as an editor and printer of newspapers.[9] He made a lot of money from the sale of both this book and Poor Richard's Almanack, which he published under the alias "Richard Saunders".After 1767, he became involved with the Pennsylvania Chronicle, a publication noted for its revolutionary views and attacks of the Crown and British Parliament's and Parliament's policies.
The Academy and College of Philadelphia, which opened its doors in 1751 and eventually changed its name to the University of Pennsylvania, was founded by him and he served as its first president. He founded the American Philosophical Society, served as its first secretary, and was chosen as its president in 1769. When Franklin led a campaign in London to have the Parliament of Great Britain abolish the unpopular Stamp Act, he became a national hero in America and an agent for other colonies. He was a skilled diplomat who gained the respect of the French as the American ambassador to Paris and played a significant role in the improvement of ties between the two countries. His efforts were essential in getting France to support the American Revolution.
