An alien spacecraft launches a shuttle from outer space to Earth, where Vietnam War veteran Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer and his military rescue team (Mac, Poncho, Blain, Billy, and Hawkins) are assigned to save a foreign cabinet minister and his assistant from communist rebels in a South American nation that isn't named. Despite Dutch's misgivings, CIA officer Al Dillon—a friend from the Vietnam War—is assigned to join the team. While traveling, the group finds three skinned bodies and the remains of a chopper. When Dutch recognizes them as familiar Green Berets, he starts to doubt Dillon's motives. When the group arrives at the guerilla camp, they see a hostage being executed. They launch an assault, taking out multiple Soviet intelligence operatives as well as the majority of the rebels.

Anna, the lone insurgent still alive, is taken prisoner. After learning that additional rebels are on their way, the group decides to hike to the extraction location. They don't realize that they are being followed by something using thermal imaging and a cloaking device, but Billy is scared and catches a glimpse, which makes Anna try to flee. When Hawkins manages to capture her, the creature attacks and kills him, leaving Anna unharmed. The creature's plasma gun kills Blain, but Dutch manages to gather a search party. Furious, Mac incites everyone to aimlessly shoot into the jungle, thereby injuring the animal. The commandos discover they are being hunted as it repairs itself; Dillon thinks the guerrillas are to blame, but Billy is certain that their assailant is to blame.
