Halo About - Halo is a military science fiction video game franchise that was conceived and produced by Bungie at first,
and is currently run and developed by , an Xbox Game Studios division of Microsoft. The first-person shooter video game Halo:
Combat Evolved and its companion book, The Fall of Reach, marked the series' 2001 debut. In late 2021, the most recent main game, Halo Infinite, was launched.
Originally released as a real-time strategy game on PCs, Combat Evolved was later bought by Microsoft and released exclusively as a first-person shooter on the
Xbox gaming console. After regaining its independence in 2007, Bungie continued to develop the Halo series by releasing new games until 2010. Microsoft formed 343
Industries to supervise Halo moving forward, developing games both independently and in collaboration with other companies.
A long time ago, a race by the name of Precursors took on the role of Mantle of Responsibility, watching over life in the cosmos.
The race known as the Forerunners was rejected by the Precursors, who selected an extinct species of humans to be their heirs. The
Precursors were driven extinct by the Forerunners as payback. The Precursors chose to perish rather than fight back; some became dust that
would eventually disperse and revert to their original forms. Ultimately, this dust developed flaws that caused organisms to get infected
and twisted into a new parasite species. These organisms were then linked to the Flood, the final Precursors,
through a hivemind. The Flood was defeated by the Forerunners, who removed humanity from Africa and brought them to Earth to live in a primitive civilization.
Halo Video Game Plot Continued
Thanks to the invention of faster-than-light "slipstream space" (also known as hyperspace) travel, humanity has colonized numerous worlds nearly a century and a half later,
under the supervision of the United Nations Space Command, or UNSC. Violent conflicts were caused by tensions between the government and colonies who wanted independence.
The SPARTAN-II Project was started by the UNSC's Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) in order to develop an elite group of improved supersoldiers who would be able to subdue
uprisings in secret. A theocratic coalition of extraterrestrial races known as the Covenant attacked human worlds in 2525, declaring humanity heretics and an insult to their
gods, the
Forerunners. With the Covenant came a holy war of genocide. Despite being successful, the Spartans' better technology and sheer numbers proved to be deciding advantages.
The Spartans were too few, despite their effectiveness, to change the balance of power in favor of humanity. One of the few surviving Spartans was Master Chief John-117,
who had been left behind after the Covenant had overrun Reach, the UNSC's last significant bastion outside Earth.
The Covenant, who saw the Halo rings as tools of transcendence rather than destruction, turned against humanity after they were rediscovered. The destruction of a Halo ring to
neutralize the Covenant and the Flood menace is made possible thanks in large part to Master Chief and his artificial intelligence Cortana. After the Prophets of Truth and Mercy
declare that the Sangheili are no longer the most honorable species in the Covenant, Master Chief vanquishes the Prophet of Regret. This sparked a conflict among the Covenant's members.
Tensions between the UNSC and colonial rebels resurfaced in the post-war era as the UNSC trained a new generation of Spartans.
When Cortana and Master Chief unintentionally release the Didact, he makes a brief comeback to try to reclaim humanity, but they stop him,
leading Master Chief to mistakenly think Cortana is dead. After surviving the Domain, Cortana declares her independence from the UNSC and establishes
artificial intelligence (the "Created") as the new hegemon over the galaxy. Following two years of sporadic combat between Cortana and the UNSC, Cortana
launches an assault against the Banished, a mercenary group predominately comprised of Jiralhanae people. In the ensuing struggle, the Banished prevail,
killing Cortana and fighting the UNSC for control of Zeta.
Bungie era, 2001 – 2010
Alex Seropian, a Chicago, Illinois-based video game developer, created Bungie in 1991 after teaming up with programmer Jason Jones to market and commercialize
Jones' game, Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete. Bungie became the leading game developer on the Mac, concentrating on the smaller and more accessible gaming market.
Originally code-named Monkey Nuts and Blam!, the real-time strategy game that would eventually become Halo: Combat
Evolved was set in the hollowed-out world of Solipsis. The planet ultimately developed into the "Halo" ringworld, which served as the title of the game.
Bungie era, 2001 – 2010
On July 21, 1999, at the Macworld Conference & Expo, Halo was unveiled. The game changed from being a third-person action game
to a real-time strategy game.Microsoft purchased Bungie on June 19, 2000, and Halo: Combat Evolved was released as the Xbox console's
debut title. The game was altered to function with a controller and changed to a first-person shooter. Even though an online multiplayer
mode was intended for the original Halo, it was left out as Xbox Live was not yet operational.
Despite internal reservations and criticism from the gaming press, Ed Fries, Microsoft's vice president of game publishing,
decided against making Halo the Xbox's flagship title. Halo was a major Xbox marketing highlight, and its green color scheme complemented
the console's aesthetic. Common to the entire trilogy, Halo: Combat Evolved introduces a number of gameplay elements and story motifs.
In an effort to accomplish goals and learn the mysteries of the titular Halo, players engage in combat with a variety of aliens both on foot
and in vehicles. Players had to choose their favorite weapon carefully because Halo only allowed them to carry two weapons at a time.Along
with melee and ranged weaponry, players can also use grenades in combat.
"Weapons-grenades-melee" is how Bungie referred to the "Golden Triangle of Halo" format.
Microsoft retained the rights to Halo even though Bungie continued to work on the series, creating titles like Reach and ODST. Microsoft established an internal company called 343 Industries to manage the Halo series.
In addition to producing Halo: Reach and 2011's Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, a remaster of the franchise's first game, 343 has previously
codeveloped the Halo Legends animated series. Halo 4, the next game in the franchise, was revealed at E3 2011 as the first installment of what was
initially going to be called the "Reclaimer Trilogy".Numerous mainstays from earlier games were present in this one as well, like enhanced map-editing
capabilities, additional or redesigned weapon classes, and more multiplayer options and maps. In November, Halo 4 was made available everywhere.
Halo Video Game Spin Offs
The development of spin-off games was prompted by the core Halo trilogy's success.
Ensemble Studios created the real-time strategy game Halo Wars for the Xbox 360. The game
is set in the year 2531, which is 21 years before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. A great deal
of work went into creating a control scheme that, in contrast to previous console strategy games, was
easy to use and intuitive. The game was launched in February and March of 2009, having been revealed at X06.
In collaboration with Endeavor One, 343 Industries created and launched Halo Recruit, a virtual reality demo game, in October 2017.
Several spin-off titles were planned or rumored for the Game Boy Advance, Gizmodo , Ultra-Mobile PC, and Nintendo DS. Microsoft announced
an episodic video game to be developed by film director Peter Jackson's Wingnut Interactive in 2006. The game, Halo: Chronicles, was ultimately canceled as part
of budget cuts tied to job layoffs in January 2009.Ensemble Studios developed a Halo-themed massively multiplayer online game, often referred to as Titan Project,
or just Titan. The project was canceled internally in 2007–2008, without a formal announcement from Microsoft. On January 4, 2007,
an IGN editor claimed he had played a version of Halo for the Nintendo DS. On October 2, 2007, IGN published a video of on camera in-game footage of what he claimed was a very
early-development playable version of what they referred to as "Halo DS". In a July 2007 interview with Siloconera, Bungie employees Frank O'Connor and Brian Jarrard clarified,
"it’s very likely that somebody at some point in time created a prototype and tried to pitch it... which is probably what Casamassina is talking about... but there has never been an
officially funded or sanctioned development of any sort of DS Halo game."
343 Industries announced a free-to-play Halo multiplayer game for Windows PC, Halo Online, in 2015. The game launched with a closed beta test limited to Russia that year. The title
was developed with Saber Interactive using modified version of the Halo 3 engine, and published by Innova Systems. The project was canceled in August 2016. Players modified
the game to circumvent the region limitations and add new content after the project's official cancellation. The "ElDewrito" project saw legal takedowns from Microsoft for violating
its game usage rules. Despite this, ElDewrito's playerbase remained active, and the modders claimed its popularity hastened Microsoft's plans to release a Windows version of Halo:
The Master Chief Collection.
Characters from Halo have made appearances in tie-in games. For example, players can choose to battle as Spartan Nicole-458 and the Arbiter in Dead
or Alive 4 and Killer Instinct: Season Three, respectively. 2020 saw the addition of Master Chief as a playable character in Fortnite, along with a stage
that was modeled like a multiplayer area from Halo.
In a different game, Halo 2600, players take control of Master Chief and battle their way through four hostile zones. Written in 2010 for the Atari 2600, it was penned by
Ed Fries, a former Microsoft vice president of game publishing.
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock had the Halo theme song as downloadable content as well. As the Master Chief, the player must race across the map on the Warthog in one of
the levels of Forza Horizon 4.
